Born in Perth WA, Kiya Kalem hails from a beachy town South of the River surrounded by scrub and shrubbery. Her botanical paintings are inspired by a lifelong fascination with plants and the unique beauty of each species. The works have a vibrancy and texture which bring new life to the classic subject of native flora. As the viewer, we are invited to engage with the work in multiple ways. On the surface the pieces are beautifully abstracted representations of our native fauna, and in another they speak of the paradox of the fragility and resilience of life. The Australian flower is seemingly delicate but in contrast to its appearance they're tough little survivors in a harsh desert landscape.Working in mixed media and oil paint, Kiya's process utilizes her innate understanding of current design trends to create pieces that blend seamlessly with the modern interior whilst enhancing the room and delighting the viewer.
